The European Union is considering suspending ratification of its trade agreement with the United States as it seeks further clarification from the Trump administration regarding a new tariff program, according to a report by Bloomberg News on Monday.

The move reflects growing uncertainty within the EU over Washington’s latest trade policies and their potential impact on transatlantic commerce.

Officials in Brussels are reportedly looking for more detailed information about the scope and implementation of the proposed tariffs before proceeding with formal approval of the agreement.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Željana Zovko, the European People’s Party’s chief trade negotiator in the European Parliament, said the EU has little choice but to delay ratification until there is greater clarity surrounding the US tariff strategy.

The European People’s Party, a center-right political group, is the largest bloc in the European Parliament and plays a significant role in shaping EU trade policy.

The reported pause signals rising trade tensions between the EU and the US at a time when both sides are navigating complex economic challenges. Analysts say any delay in ratifying the trade deal could affect investment flows, tariffs, and broader economic cooperation between the two economies.

EU officials have not yet announced a final decision, but discussions are ongoing as policymakers assess the potential implications of the new US tariff measures on European industries and global trade stability.
