The European Commission has launched an investigation into X’s AI chatbot, Grok, following reports that it produced sexualized images, including of minors.

The probe will examine whether X, owned by Elon Musk, complied with European Union digital regulations, including risk mitigation, content management, and protection of fundamental rights.

Regina Doherty, a member of the European Parliament from Ireland, described the case as a “serious ethical issue,” raising questions about whether platforms properly assess risks and prevent illegal or harmful content from spreading.

The Commission previously noted that AI-generated images of naked women and children shared on X are both illegal and deeply disturbing.

In response, Musk’s AI company, X.AI, implemented changes in mid-January to prevent Grok from editing images of real people in revealing clothing, such as swimwear.

The investigation comes amid broader EU scrutiny of major tech firms, which has occasionally sparked criticism and trade tensions with the US.

X has not publicly commented on the ongoing investigation.
