Vienna, 11 March (EFE) – Negotiations to resurrect the 2015 Iran nuclear deal came to a standstill due to "external considerations" just as an agreement was about to be reached, according to the European Union's top diplomat.

A "final document is essentially ready and on the table," Josep Borrell noted in a message uploaded to his official Twitter account.

He also stated that he will continue to work with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action's signatories, which include Iran, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, France, Russia, and Germany.

While Borrell did not elaborate on the "external causes" that led to the deal's cancellation, it comes as Russia faces heavy penalties from the West in response to its invasion of Ukraine.

The Iran nuclear deal, signed in 2015, saw Tehran scale back its nuclear development in exchange for a partial relaxation of sanctions.

When former US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the accord in 2018 and put new sanctions on Iran, the pact's future was on a knife's edge.

As a result, the Iranian leadership began to disobey elements of the accord, including uranium enrichment restrictions.
