The European Union has imposed new sanctions on 16 individuals and three entities accused of serious human rights violations in Iran.
In a statement released Monday, the Council of the European Union explained that the measures target those believed to have played a key role in suppressing nationwide protests in January 2026.
According to the statement, the sanctions are linked to a crackdown on popular demonstrations that resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians.
EU officials said the move is part of ongoing efforts to hold those responsible for human rights abuses in Iran accountable.
