The European Commission’s spokesperson for humanitarian affairs, Eva Herncherova, described the humanitarian crisis in Sudan as “catastrophic beyond words,” condemning the atrocities taking place across the country and urging an immediate ceasefire to allow aid delivery to civilians in need.
Herncherova said Sudan is “bleeding,” stressing that the scale of suffering exceeds ordinary humanitarian needs. “There are no words strong enough to describe the magnitude of this catastrophe,” she said, adding that providing even basic relief has become a major challenge.
Herncherova noted that the European Union remains one of the largest global donors of humanitarian assistance to Sudan, emphasizing that the European Commission is working through all possible channels to deliver urgent aid to those affected by the ongoing conflict.
“The European Union condemns, in the strongest possible terms, all forms of atrocities being committed in Sudan,” she said, underscoring that such acts constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law. “Starvation and killing must never be used as tools of war,” she added.
The EU spokesperson called on all warring parties to return to the negotiating table, agree on an immediate and lasting ceasefire, and ensure unhindered access for humanitarian aid to reach civilians.
“Our primary goal,” she stressed, “is to protect civilians and guarantee that assistance reaches everyone in need.”
