The European Union has officially hailed the reopening of the Rafah border crossing as a pivotal milestone in securing a lasting ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas characterized the move as a practical and positive advancement in supporting the peace process and stabilizing the ongoing truce.

EU Monitoring Mission Deployed Writing on the social media platform X, Kallas confirmed that an EU civilian mission is currently on the ground to monitor crossing operations. The mission’s presence is intended to provide technical support and ensure the efficient movement of people and goods, working in coordination with Palestinian border authorities.

Kallas described the reopening as a vital "lifeline" for the residents of Gaza, particularly for the injured and sick who require urgent medical evacuation. Furthermore, she emphasized the human impact of the decision, noting that it allows for the reunification of families who have been separated for prolonged periods due to the conflict.

Humanitarian Aid and the Path to Reconstruction Despite this progress, the EU diplomat warned that the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains critical. She stressed that the international community must sustain these practical steps to push the truce plan forward.

Regarding the future of the enclave, Kallas reiterated the EU's stance on long-term stability, stating that large-scale reconstruction efforts are intrinsically linked to the demilitarization of Hamas. For now, the focus remains on the immediate delivery of life-saving humanitarian aid and maintaining the fragile ceasefire.
