EU Considers Sanctions on US Firms

The European Union is preparing potential sanctions against American companies in response to renewed US plans to acquire Greenland, according to a report by The Sunday Telegraph, citing senior European sources.

The newspaper said Brussels is examining measures that could restrict the operations of major US technology firms in Europe, including Meta, Google, Microsoft and X. American banks and financial institutions could also face limitations under the proposed response.

According to the report, European officials are also discussing more far-reaching options. These could include curtailing US military access to bases in Europe, a move that would significantly affect Washington’s ability to use the continent as a strategic hub for operations in the Middle East and other regions.

The discussions follow statements by US President Donald Trump, who said in March 2025 that the United States would annex Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark. Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland should become part of the United States, citing strategic and security interests, and has threatened to impose steep trade tariffs on Denmark if it refused to relinquish control of the island.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has firmly rejected the proposal, stressing that Greenland is an integral part of the Danish kingdom and is not for sale. Copenhagen has described the US president’s remarks as unacceptable and destabilizing.

The dispute has also raised questions about existing defense arrangements. Under the 1951 Greenland Defense Treaty, signed by Washington and Copenhagen alongside their commitments within NATO, the United States is responsible for helping defend Greenland against external aggression.
