The European Union (EU) strongly condemned Turkish Cypriots and Ankara's move of opening Varosha, a statement released on Tuesday indicated.
In addition, the EU rejected all statements did by Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarding welcoming and backing such a step. It also described Erdogan's situation as "unacceptable."
The European bloc added in the statement that it follows the resolutions done by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) about Varosha.
Furthermore, it asserted that any "attempts to settle any part of Varosha by people other than its inhabitants as inadmissible, and which call for the transfer of that area to the administration of the United Nations. No actions should be carried out in relation to Varosha that are not in accordance with those resolutions."
The union called for avoiding any unilateral actions that would increase more tension in the island, alongside hailing the statement released by UNSC.
It is worthy to mention that the (UNSC) condemned Turkey and Turkish Cypriots’ plan to partially open Varosha, and it called for an immediate reversal of the decision, last week.
The UNSC said in a statement: “The Security Council calls for the immediate reversal of this course of action and the reversal of all steps taken on Varosha since October 2020.”
It concluded: “The Security Council underscores the need to avoid any further unilateral actions not in accordance with its resolutions and that could raise tensions on the island and harm prospects for a settlement."
