European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced the mobilisation of EU relief stocks to assist some 130,000 people in Lebanon, with the first flight scheduled for tomorrow, amid escalating regional tensions.
In her remarks at a high-level regional meeting, von der Leyen emphasized the protection of civilians and the respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “The European Union remains steadfast in supporting those affected by conflict and instability in the region,” she said.
The meeting brought together regional leaders to assess the current security situation in their countries and across the broader Middle East. Discussions focused on recent attacks targeting energy infrastructure and the strategic closure of the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting the potential implications for global energy security.
Leaders also explored avenues to strengthen cooperation with Middle East partners to mitigate these risks. They agreed to maintain close contact to monitor developments and coordinate efforts in pursuit of peace.
The European Union further reiterated its commitment to working with regional partners to restore stability and prosperity in the Middle East and Gulf region, reaffirming its role as a reliable partner in security, humanitarian aid, and regional cooperation.
