European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her deep concern on Sunday over the newly announced U.S. tariffs by President Donald Trump.
In a phone call with UK Prime Minister (PM) Keir Starmer, von der Leyen voiced her fears about the harm these tariffs could cause to countries around the world, both directly and indirectly, including to the poorest nations.
Moreover, Von der Leyen reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to engage in negotiations with the United States (U.S.) while emphasizing that the bloc is prepared to defend its interests through countermeasures if necessary.
During their conversation, von der Leyen and Starmer also discussed ongoing efforts to end the war in Ukraine, as well as preparations for the upcoming EU–UK summit scheduled for May 19.
