The European Union (EU) on Saturday called for a swift and independent investigation into the crash of an Azerbaijani Airlines passenger plane near Aktau Airport in western Kazakhstan last Wednesday. The accident resulted in 38 fatalities and 29 injuries.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported this in its English-language broadcast, without providing additional details.
Preliminary data indicates that the ill-fated plane was carrying 37 Azerbaijani nationals, six Kazakh citizens, three Kyrgyz citizens, and 16 Russians.
The aircraft, which was en route from Azerbaijan's capital, Baku, to Grozny in Chechnya, diverted to Aktau Airport in western Kazakhstan due to dense fog.
