The European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) has reported an 11% decline in asylum applications across the EU, Norway, and Switzerland in 2024 compared to the previous year.

According to the agency’s latest report, released on Monday, approximately 1.01 million asylum requests were submitted last year, down from 1.14 million in 2023.

Despite a decrease in applications, Syrians continued to be the most frequent asylum seekers. The report highlighted that Germany received the highest number of asylum applications, totaling 237,000—accounting for 23% of all requests across the region.

Nearly one-third of these applications in Germany came from Syrian nationals, followed by Afghan and Turkish applicants.

At the end of 2024, approximately 4.4 million individuals were under temporary protection in the 27 EU member states, along with Norway and Switzerland.

The data underscores Europe’s ongoing efforts to manage migration while balancing humanitarian responsibilities.

This decline in asylum applications marks a shift in migration trends, prompting discussions on future EU asylum policies and border management strategies.
