The European Union (EU) reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Egypt in managing migration and refugee challenges, highlighting the country’s role as the second-largest recipient of asylum applications globally.

Speaking at an event showcasing the achievements of the United Nations’ Joint Programme under the Common Platform for Migrants and Refugees in Egypt, EU Ambassador to Cairo Angelina Eichhorst praised Egypt’s efforts and stressed the importance of sustained international cooperation.

“The EU is proud to work in Egypt with partners who believe in providing continuous support to refugees and migrants,” Eichhorst said. “Egypt bears a significant responsibility as the second-largest country receiving asylum seekers, and this is undoubtedly a heavy burden on the government.”

She underscored the need for greater international support to address urgent priorities, particularly in healthcare, education, and social protection for vulnerable groups. Eichhorst also pointed to initiatives such as the government’s *Takaful and Karama* program, which she said should be integrated with other efforts to maximize impact.

“Egypt is one of the EU’s most strategic partners,” she added. “Its central role, both politically and in terms of security, is highly recognized by the European Union, and this makes our continued cooperation indispensable.”

The Common Platform for Migrants and Refugees in Egypt is a partnership between the Egyptian government and the United Nations. It seeks to strengthen protection, integration, and resilience for migrants, refugees, and host communities, while also improving access to essential services such as health, education, and social protection.
