The European Union's (EU) foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, accused Russia on Saturday of putting the world at risk of starvation due to the ban on grain exports from Ukraine and restrictions on its own exports.
Threats to food security and a "fact-telling battle" with Russia over the reality of sanctions imposed on Moscow will be the focus of EU foreign ministers' talks Monday in Luxembourg.
"We are ready to work with the United Nations (UN) to prevent any unwanted impact of our sanctions on global food security," Borrell said in an article posted on his official blog.
Borrell also condemned "the political choice that Russia consciously made to militarize grain exports and use it as a tool to blackmail anyone who opposes its offensive" in Ukraine.
He noted that "Russia has turned the Black Sea into a war zone, obstructing shipments of grain and fertilizers from Ukraine.
