The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, criticized a statement from the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the recent Arab summit's support for Egypt and Sudan's position on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

The spokesperson called the statement "misleading, full of fallacies and divorced from reality" and accused Ethiopia of trying to create a rift between Arab and African countries.

He also rejected the statement's claims that Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan had already agreed on the volume of water to be stored and the filling period of the dam reservoir, and that Egypt and Sudan's request for Arab support violated the principles agreement.

The spokesperson emphasized Egypt's history of supporting African liberation movements and its efforts to support economic and social development programs on the continent.

He also called on Ethiopia to stop using the pretext of "colonial agreements" to evade its legal obligations and to reach a legally binding agreement that takes into account the existential concerns of downstream countries.
