Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde called on citizens to preserve the national unity of the country, according to Sputnik news agency.

In her speech during a special ceremony for Ethiopian nationalities in Addis Ababa, Zewde said, 'we really need to have a red line when it comes to national unity and sovereignty," calling on citizens to protect their country from acts that try to violate this 'red line'.

Moreover, the Ethiopian President urged citizens to learn from the past and preserve their homeland's sovereignty, in order to achieve a better future.

Zewde's remarks come as the effects of the armed conflict between forces of the federal government and Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) during the past weeks have not yet ended.

It is worth mentioning that, after weeks of clashes, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced, on Monday, the end of military operations in the disputed Tigray region.

According to a statement issued by Abiy’s Office, “the mission is now focused on delivering humanitarian aid to the population.”

The Ethiopian statement added that the authorities bring the perpetrators to justice and restore law and order, pointing out that the Ethiopian government will work to secure humanitarian aid to the region’s citizens and resettle the displaced people.

the Ethiopian Prime Minister declared victory at the end of last week in the long-running conflict, but the fighting between federal and regional forces continued.
