In a surprising move, the Ethiopian Parliament will discuss a draft resolution presented by U.S. Congress Member Karen Bass (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, calling on the administration to take a "fair position" in the negotiations of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam in a manner that preserves the rights of Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt.
Bass called on the government of Addis Ababa to respect human rights, according to Media reports published on Friday.
Bass said that she has become concerned about the recent unrest in the country as well as the administration’s involvement in the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) negotiations, according to Black Star News.
The Congresswoman also urged those involved in the negotiations to maintain a neutral position that seeks an equitable and fair solution for all parties involved.
“I also am concerned that cuts in foreign assistance to Addis Ababa will have a negative impact on the Ethiopian community,” the Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa noted.
“This resolution reiterates that the United States House of Representatives stands by the people of Ethiopia and supports their peaceful efforts to advance democratic reforms.”
