The Ethiopian army announced Tuesday that it had completely taken control of Humera airport in the northern Tigray region, according to several media outlets.

"The Ethiopian National Defense Force has fully captured Humera Airport amid continuation of government’s military response against TPLF rebel group," state controlled television reported.

The army said that a number of militants, previous allies with current Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, have surrendered.

The Ethiopian army added that the militants were intending to use Humera airport to launch an attack against the Ethiopian forces.

It was reported also that special forces members, the police and organized militia under the leadership of the Tigray People's Liberation Front, had surrendered to the army.

The army then announced that it had taken control of Medaille, Dansheha, Baker and Humera-Sudan Road, as part of the government's operation.
