On Thursday, Ethiopian Prime Minister (PM) Abiy Ahmed announced troops' deployment in Benishangul Gumuz region after more than 100 people were killed in an ethnic attack in western Ethiopia, according to Russia Today (RT).
"Benishangul Gumuz massacre is extremely tragic ... and to solve the root causes of the problem, the government decided to deploy the necessary forces," Abiy tweets.
It is worth mentioning that, late Wednesday, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said in a statement "more than 100 people were killed by gunfire perpetrated by armed men" in the Benishangul-Gumuz region at dawn.
The group said the gunmen set homes of sleeping residents on fire.
The attack came the day after the PM and the military’s chief of staff Birhanu Jula, and other senior federal officials, visited the region to urge calm after a number of deadly incidents between rival ethnic groups in recent months, according to "The Guardian".
The most recent previous attack in the area was on 14 November, when gunmen targeted a bus and killed 34 people.
