The Ethiopian Electoral Council said on Saturday that the Prosperity Party led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed won a landslide victory in the Ethiopian parliamentary elections, in a victory that guarantees him another presidential term.

Abiy called the elections as the first free and fair elections in decades, yet, opposition boycotts, war in Tigray, ethnic violence and logistical challenges overshadowed the controversial elections, with no voting taking place in three of Ethiopia's regions.

The Vice-Chairman of the Election Commission Woubshet Ayele announced that the party won 410 out of 436 seats in parliament.

Opposition leader Berhanu Nega said his Ezema party filed 207 complaints after officials and militias blocked monitors in the Amhara region and the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR).

Voting in the regions of Harar and Somalia was postponed until September due to security concerns and ballot issue.

The Ethiopian government has set no exact date for the vote in Tigray, where the army has been fighting Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) since November.

Up to two million people has been displaced due to the fighting, and according to the United famine is spreading throughout the region.

All this comes amid a political dispute over the Nile, as Ethiopia ignores the water rights of Egypt and Sudan by building a controversial dam, which if complete could hold up to one year worth of River water flow, threatening the safety and security of basin countries.
