The Egyptian-Russian foundation for culture and science (ERFCS) has published a book entitled “Russian Nuclear Power Plants” by Mohamed Mounir Mujahid, former vice president of the Nuclear Power Plants Authority.
Dr. Hussein Shafei, head of the ERFCS, said that Egypt was one of the first countries to realize the enormous potential of atom, which could be utilized to provide the energy and water needed to ensure sustainable development in Egypt.
In this regard, the Atomic Energy Commission was established in 1955 under the chairmanship of late President Gamal Abdel Nasser and the Atomic Energy Corporation was established in 1957.
The use of nuclear power to generate electricity began to be considered in the early 1960s, but Egypt's nuclear power plant program stalled for various internal and external reasons.
The Egyptian nuclear program remained on hold until it was revived in 2007.
In the same context, a cooperation agreement was signed between the Egyptian and Russian governments on peaceful uses of atomic energy areas in March 25, 2008.
After June 2013, a decision was taken to resume the construction of Al-Dabaa nuclear power plant and negotiations started with Russian Nuclear Company “Rosatom” in March 2015.
