Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Monday that Israel will not achieve the peace it seeks without establishing an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on the pre-June 5, 1967 borders.
According to the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet, Erdoğan stated in a speech before foreign ambassadors in the capital, Ankara, that Israeli government ministers are "playing with fire" through provocations targeting Al-Aqsa Mosque.
He also emphasized the absolute necessity of having an Islamic state with veto power in the United Nations Security Council.
On another note, Erdoğan reiterated that Turkey considers its European Union membership process a "strategic priority" because it is an "inseparable part of Europe."
Speaking at an Iftar dinner marking the holy month of Ramadan, he added, "It is becoming increasingly impossible for Europe to continue as a global actor without Turkey assuming its rightful place."
