On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the European Union to get rid of what he called "strategic blindness", according to Sputnik news agency.

In televised remarks, Erdogan pointed out that a long term solution for the eastern Mediterranean dispute requires 'giving diplomacy a chance'.

"We cannot stand idly by in front of developments in the Mediterranean," he added.

Moreover, Erdogan also revealed that scientific research indicates the existence of between "3.5 and 10 trillion cubic meters of natural gas in the eastern Mediterranean."

It is worth mentioning, European Union (EU) foreign ministers will evaluate, on Monday, the reasons for imposing sanctions on Turkey over the Mediterranean gas dispute before EU leaders decide whether to implement their threat of punitive measures.

The ministers will not make any decisions at their meeting on Monday, leaving that for EU leaders, who, in October told Turkey to stop drilling in the disputed waters in the eastern Mediterranean or face the consequences.

EU leaders are set to hold a summit next Thursday.
