Elon Musk has asked Tesla employees to return to their desks at least 40 hours a week or leave the company.

Musk wrote to employees in two separate emails that people should show up for at least 40 hours a week at Tesla's head office. "If you don't show up, we'll assume you quit," he said in one of the emails, first reported by Electrek and also obtained by CNBC.

“Anyone who wants to do remote work must be in the office for at least 40 hours (and I mean *minimum*) per week or leave Tesla,” Musk said in the first email, according to Electrek. "That's less than we're asking factory workers."

The email continued, "If there are particularly exceptional contributors for whom this is impossible, I will review and approve those exceptions directly."

“There are of course companies that don't order it, but when was the last time you shipped a great new product? It's been a while,” Musk wrote in the second email sent.

“Tesla has created and will create and manufacture the most exciting and meaningful products for any company on Earth. This will not happen over the phone,” he added.
