Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, a new online encyclopedia created by his artificial intelligence company xAI, positioning it as a competitor to Wikipedia, which he and other conservatives in the United States have accused of ideological bias.
The first version of Grokipedia was released on Monday evening and currently includes more than 885,000 entries, compared with Wikipedia’s seven million English articles. Musk stated that a new and improved version will be released soon, claiming it will be significantly better than the initial one.
The launch, originally planned for late September, was delayed for several days to allow for the removal of promotional or biased content.
Grokipedia’s articles are generated by artificial intelligence through xAI’s Grok assistant and supported by a range of external sources displayed on each page.
Musk has repeatedly criticised Wikipedia, arguing that it is influenced by left-leaning activists. The content of Grokipedia reflects his perspective, portraying him as a figure who has shaped debates on multiple issues while suggesting that traditional media coverage of him tends to be biased.
The platform’s page about the Black Lives Matter movement claims that the protests mobilised millions but also resulted in costly riots, without including Wikipedia’s statement that most demonstrations in 2020 were peaceful.
Wikipedia, founded in 2001, remains the world’s largest collaborative encyclopedia. It is managed by volunteers, funded primarily through donations, and maintains that it strives to present information from a neutral point of view.
