SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said on Tuesday that total investment in Starlink will reach between $5- 10 billion before the satellite internet operator generates earnings.

Musk stated during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) held in Barcelona that the total investment could account to $20-30 billion over the years. "It's basically a lot," Musk said in a video interview.

SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet should have nearly 500,000 users within the next 12 months, Musk said, adding that SpaceX's current goal is to bring broadband internet to most of the planet by August.

Musk told MWC that the Internet, in the midst of an open beta phase, has launched more than 1,700 satellites into low Earth orbit since 2018 and recently surpassed a "strategically important" benchmark of 69,420 active users.

He said Starlink already operates in 12 countries and is expanding. "I think we're on track to have a few hundred thousand users, maybe more than 500,000 users in 12 months," he added.

Meanwhile, SpaceX was minutes away from launching its 20th mission of the year on Tuesday when the countdown was interrupted by a plane entering the launch range, delaying the mission by at least 24 hours.

Musk reiterated on Twitter his frustration over the delay, and regulations around the missile launch business.
