Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, is temporarily limiting the number of tweets people can read.

On Saturday, Musk said the move was to address "extreme levels of data scrapping & system manipulation."

The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX tweeted that verified accounts will be able to read 10,000 tweets per day and unverified accounts will be able to read 1,000 tweets per day. Newly created and unverified accounts will be limited to 500 tweets per day.

Musk initially announced stricter restrictions but changed them within hours.

He did not say when the restriction would be lifted.

The announcement comes after users reported that they encountered error messages that read, "Cannot retrieve tweets."

Thousands mentioned that they were unable to access the social networking site, according to Downdetector, which tracks internet disruptions.

Twitter on Friday began restricting content to users who don't have an account, with Musk saying Friday that "drastic and immediate action was necessary due to EXTREME levels of data scraping."

Data mining refers to a process in which data or content is extracted from one site, often without permission, to be displayed on another site.

Twitter previously allowed people to view content without logging in.

The site has suffered from technical difficulties in recent months.
