Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy confirmed that Egypt is continuing its tireless efforts to implement its "peaceful" nuclear program to meet the growing economic and industrial development needs, in cooperation with Russia by starting the implementation of the construction of the first nuclear plant in the Dabaa region.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Shaker said that the Dabaa plant consists of 4 nuclear units with a total capacity of 4,800 megawatts, where the first unit of it is expected to be ready commercial operation by 2026.

He pointed out that coordination between the electricity sector and all concerned authorities had been made to prepare the national strategy to confront climate change.

This came during the minister's meeting with COP26 President Alok Sharma with senior officials and stakeholders to discuss climate issues and prepare for the next session of the conference scheduled to be held during November 2021 in England.

On his part, Sharma praised the reforms that Egypt has succeeded in achieving in the electricity sector.

He affirmed his desire to increase the volume of cooperation and increase the contribution of renewable energies in order to "reach zero emissions," noting the importance of continuing cooperation during the coming period ahead of the COP26 conference in order to achieve the desired goals on climate change.

It is worth noting that Egypt is committed to the Paris Agreement, and participates periodically in the conference in addition to having submitted a request to host the conference in 2022.
