El Gouna Film Festival (GFF) announced on Thursday the details for its 4th edition, which is scheduled to run from October 23 to 31 at El Gouna Resort-town, in the Red Sea governorate.
The conference was held under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the Ministry of Health and Population, the Ministry of Culture, and the Egyptian Film Centre.
It was opened by veteran actress Yousra who was presented by journalist and TV presenter Lamis Elhadidy.
The press conference was attended by the festival's founder, Naguib Sawiris, El Gouna founder Engineer Samih Sawiris, GFF co-founder and CEO of GFF’s organizing company Amr Mansi, GFF co-founder and COO of GFF’s organizing company Bushra Rozza, GFF director Intishal Al Timimi, and GFF artistic director, Amir Ramses.
Yousra confirmed that holding the El Gouna Film Festival at this time reflects Egypt’s strength in defying crises, especially the coronavirus pandemic.
‘Richa Chadda’
Bushra stated that Indian actress, Richa Chadda’, will be one of the festival’s guests in this edition.
Chadda is set to participate in a seminar on women, which include many women working in the field of cinema, including director Najwa Najjar.
‘Participating Films’
About 16 films will participate in the Feature Narrative Competition, 10 films in the Feature Documentary Competition, and 18 films in the Short Film Competition.
The festival will be screening 2 films in GFF’s Special Presentations program as well as 17 films in its Official Selection out of Competition section.
Egyptian actor Ahmed Malek’s first international film, “The Furnace” by Australian director Roderick MacKay is set to compete in the official competition.
‘CineGouna Platform’
GFF has invited a number of leading regional and international experts in the field of cinema to participate in its various activities.
The CineGouna SpringBoard received 99 submissions, 65 projects in development, and 34 films in post-production, from all parts of the Arab world.
A panel of experts reviewed the submissions and selected 18 projects, 12 in development, and 6 in post-production, to participate in this year’s edition.
The selection committee carefully selected the submissions on the basis of their content, artistic vision, and overall financial feasibility.
The CineGouna Bridge will continue to serve as a forum for effective professional development. It will present a series of roundtable discussions, workshops, presentations, and master classes with key industry professionals and experts.
The CineGouna Platform programs and activities will take place at the TU Berlin, El Gouna Campus from October 25 to 29, 2020.
‘Career Achievement Award’
Actor Khaled El Sawy and renowned production designer Onsi Abou Seif are set to receive the Career Achievement Award, for their distinctive and influential participation in the art scene.
GFF will also host an exhibition of Onsi Abou Seif works, which will include some of his designs and sketches, video clips from his films, movie posters, and awards he has received over the course of his career.
‘Charlie Chaplin’
The Festival continues its “Cinema in Concert” tradition, in which an orchestral performance of film scores of classics and audience favorites.
GFF will screen Charlie Chaplin's newly restored copy of “The Kid” accompanied by an orchestra led by Maestro Ahmed El Saidi.
Cinema in Concert will be held at Gouna Conference and Culture Center.
‘GFF amid Coronavirus’
In light of the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic, GFF, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, will provide the tools and follow the measures necessary to ensure a safe, healthy, and enjoyable festival.
For outdoor events, Gouna Conference and Culture Center (The Plaza) is equipped to accommodate up to 1000 guests and will be dedicated to holding the opening and closing ceremonies, in addition to the galas.
