"El-Fishawi Cafe"

CAIRO SEP 19 (SEE): El-Fishawi Cafe is one of the major coffee shops in the heart of El-Hussein Area which was  adestination of both Egyptian and Arab figures such as leaders, politicians, and intellectuals.

The famous cafe started as a small buffet called "bosfor" then it was "El-Fishawy Cafe" after it was renovated by Abdullah El-Fishawy in 1771 at the heart of Khan El- El-khalili.

The cafe consists of a long pathway that is pided into several corners on both sides of the passage and each corner has the name of a renowned author or artist like Naguib Mahfouz corner, Ahmed Rami corner and Hafez Ibrahim Corner.

As furniture it consists of wooden seats dates back to 1910. It has pieces of Arabesque, marble tables, and ancient copper trays.

The Cafe is also distinctive with its unique antiques displayed all around the cafe like the African Crocodile hanging on the cafe's wall that was a gift from Sudanese Prime Minister and glass curtains made of gemstones.

Mahfouz was one of the cafe's  regular visitors. He authored most of his novels in this famous coffee shop.

He loved being there in Ramadan listening to folk singers such as Mohammed Abdel Motleb and Muhammed El-Khalwi.

El- Fishawi  hosted many renowned Egyptians and non- Egyptian figures like" Napoléon Bonaparte, Romel, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir", in addition to Arab princes and "Empress Eugenie" who visited Egypt during Suez Canal inauguration in 1869.
