Sales of "Kahk al-Eid" and other feast cookies increased during the past two days in the Egyptian market by more than 30% compared to the same period last year, coinciding with the occasion of Eid al-Fitr celebration, according to Salah Al-Abd, the head of the confectionery pision of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce.
Al-Abd said that sales in the current period is also witnessing an increase compared to the beginning of this month, indicating that the prices have not witnessed any increase in line with the economic situation of citizens amid coronavirus.
He mentioned that despite an increase in some production inputs in the local market, especially with the increase in the price of some nuts and ghee, which are considered a major input in manufacturing. Flour also witnessed an increase of 20% coinciding with global price rises, however, traders refused to move prices.
Al-Abd emphasized that sugar prices didn't changed at around 7000 to 7400 pounds per ton, which prompted merchants to keep prices of Eid products unchanged, explaining that merchants rely heavily on the current season in making big sales, especially since last year came against the expectations of many traders.
Regarding the prices of Eid cakes and biscuits, Al-Abd mentioned that the prices are affordable for everyone, starting from 100 to 120 pounds for popular items, expecting a good season for those working in the confectionery industry during the current period.
