Egypt's Strategic Staple Reserves Sufficient for 5 months

Alaa Ezz, Secretary General of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce (FECC) announced on Thursday that Egypt's strategic staple reserves from commodities and basic goods, whether local or imported, cover consumption for a period of more than 5 months, other than what was shipped to arrive in the coming weeks.

He pointed out that the government, in partnership with the private sector, is working to provide sufficient stock until November 2020.

Ezz added that the strategic reserve of wheat is sufficient for about 5 months, other than that the new crop. Also, the reserve of  cooking oil is sufficient for the same period, other than the stock in the ports.

He explained that the strategic grain reserve of rice suffices 4.6 months, adding that the new season will start in two months. Moreover, pasta reserves suffices 5.2 months, and sugar covers consumption for about 7.3 months.

Ezz explained that the balance of dairy or milk products is sufficient for 5 months. Also, fresh meat covers consumption for 29 months, while frozen ones for 5 months.

Data indicated that the reserve from poultry is sufficient for 11.9 months, with the door open for import, while the soap and other hygiene products are sufficient for the next 7 months.

In addition, tea products are sufficient for 9 months, while fertilizers for 6 months, in addition to the availability of other raw materials including sulfur.

Meantime, Egypt will boost its strategic reserves to six months to ensure supply during epidemic.

“Egypt has enough reserves of staple commodities sufficient for up to 3-6months. We are working now on increasing the reserves of all of the staples to 6 months,” Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Thursday.
