The Egyptian National Railways has dispatched its 26th train journey to transport Sudanese nationals back to their homeland under the "Voluntary Return" initiative.

The project, a humanitarian lifeline for families displaced by conflict, continues to highlight Egypt’s strategic and humanitarian commitment to its southern neighbor.

The latest train, numbered 1940, departed Cairo’s Ramses Station on Saturday morning, carrying hundreds of Sudanese families southward. Their destination: Aswan, the final Egyptian stop before continuing their journey to Sudan. The train is scheduled to arrive at 11:40 p.m., and will resume standard passenger service from Aswan at 11:30 a.m. the following day.

The operation is part of a broader initiative spearheaded by Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, Engineer Kamel El-Wazir. As of this latest trip, a total of 24,704 Sudanese passengers have been transported safely through Egyptian territory, reaffirming Cairo’s role as a regional pillar of stability.

The Egyptian National Railways has worked in close coordination with partner agencies to ensure that all logistical, security, and humanitarian measures are in place. Technical teams were mobilized to guarantee the trains meet the highest standards of safety and comfort, particularly for the vulnerable families on board.

Officials stress that this effort is not merely logistical, it is deeply rooted in shared history and brotherhood. “This initiative reflects the profound historical ties and enduring fraternity between the Egyptian and Sudanese peoples,” read a statement from the Railways Authority.

Egypt’s support for Sudanese nationals fleeing the impact of internal unrest has been multi-layered. In addition to transportation, Cairo has opened its healthcare and education systems to thousands of displaced families since the onset of the Sudanese crisis in 2023.

The latest train journey underscores how Egypt continues to balance its domestic priorities with its role as a regional humanitarian actor, a stance that has earned international recognition from global bodies and neighboring states alike.
