In a significant phone dialogue with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Egypt's President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has made a compelling appeal for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza. According to Ahmed Fahmy, the official spokesperson for the Egyptian presidency, the leaders addressed the concerning Israeli military escalation in the region.

The talks focused on the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza and the international aid efforts championed by Egypt. Von der Leyen acknowledged Egypt's pivotal role in supporting Gaza's populace during these tumultuous times and in assisting the safe exit of foreign nationals from the area.

President Sisi conveyed to von der Leyen that while Egypt is at the forefront in coordinating global humanitarian aid, these efforts should not detract from the pressing necessity of a ceasefire. He accentuated the international community's obligation to both political engagement and moral action to protect Palestinian civilians and halt collective punitive measures.

Underscoring Egypt's staunch refusal to see the Palestinian issue sidelined without a just resolution, President Sisi categorically rejected any forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt. He underlined the urgent need to de-escalate tensions to facilitate a political process towards the long-standing goal of a two-state solution, which he views as the sole path to a just and enduring peace in the Middle East.
