Hanafy El Gebaly, Speaker of Egypt’s House of Representatives, inaugurated the first meeting of the Bureau and the Enlarged Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM), marking the beginning of Egypt’s presidency of the assembly.

In his opening remarks, El Gebaly underscored that Egypt’s assumption of the presidency comes at a critical time for the region, which is grappling with challenges threatening security and stability.

He emphasized the need for parliaments across UfM member states to intensify joint efforts, describing the assembly as a vital platform to strengthen dialogue, foster communication, and exchange visions among member countries.

The Speaker highlighted Egypt’s long-standing engagement in the activities of the PA-UfM since its establishment. He outlined Cairo’s broader vision, which seeks to reinforce the principles of shared ownership and collective responsibility among member states in order to achieve security, growth, and prosperity for the peoples of the Mediterranean region.

El Gebaly also announced that the Egyptian Parliament had entrusted Mohamed Abou EL Enein, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, with the presidency of the PA-UfM. The decision reflects recognition of Abou EL Enein’s extensive political, economic, and developmental experience, as well as his distinguished record in both regional and international parliamentary diplomacy.

Concluding his speech, El Gebaly expressed hope that the PA-UfM would serve as a lifeline for the peoples of the Mediterranean, helping establish the values of just peace, genuine cooperation, and constructive dialogue. He warned that failure to act collectively could leave the region vulnerable to instability and uncertainty.
