Egypt’s “Mawadda” programme has reached millions of citizens through its digital platform offering family counselling and awareness services, a senior official at the Ministry of Social Solidarity said.

Randa Fares, adviser to the minister and director of the initiative, said the programme was launched in 2019 under a presidential directive to curb rising divorce rates.

Initially piloted in three governorates with the highest divorce levels, Mawadda has since expanded nationwide and now includes 17 specialised initiatives, she said in televised remarks.

The programme focuses on correcting misconceptions within family life, including marital relations and child-rearing practices, as part of broader efforts to promote social stability.

Fares said more than 2.2 million young people have benefited from in-person training, while over 5.6 million citizens have accessed services via the programme’s digital platform, launched in December 2019.

The initiative also introduced an online consultation service, “Ask Mawadda”, which allows users to receive responses from specialists within 48 hours.

Originally targeting couples preparing for marriage, Mawadda has broadened its scope to cover all stages of family life, including engaged couples, newlyweds and families with children up to 18 years old. It offers tailored training packages designed to bridge generational gaps and strengthen family cohesion.

Fares added that the programme works with universities and educational institutions to better prepare young people for family life, focusing on informed partner selection and managing social and economic challenges.

Egypt has in recent years expanded efforts to support family development and social cohesion, with Mawadda forming a key pillar of those policies.
