Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry highlighted Egypt's commitment to adopting a comprehensive approach to migration governance. The meeting, which took place from April 21 to 23, focused on reinforcing the multifaceted cooperation between Egypt and the IOM.

During a recent visit to Egypt by Amy Pope, the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, spokesperson and Director of Public Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, conveyed that Minister Shoukry praised the productive relationship with the IOM.

He expressed a keen interest in enhancing this partnership to ensure effective management of migration, aiming to achieve sustainable development in alignment with the objectives of the Global Compact for Migration. Shoukry emphasized the need to align the IOM’s work priorities with the realities faced by developing countries heavily impacted by migration issues.

Minister Shoukry reiterated Egypt's strategic approach to migration, which not only addresses security concerns but also encompasses developmental aspects linked to migration. He highlighted tackling the root causes of irregular migration, such as conflicts, economic difficulties, and climate change effects.

Shoukry pointed out the sharp increase in migrant inflows to Egypt, driven by individuals seeking stability, and noted that the international support Egypt receives is insufficient compared to the challenges it faces in providing adequate conditions for migrants.

The discussions also touched upon cooperation with the IOM in facilitating legal migration channels and bridging gaps in labor markets, which benefits origin, transit, and destination countries, as well as migrants themselves.

Additionally, the talks featured the impact of climate change on migration, especially relevant during Egypt's presidency of the COP27 conference. Minister Shoukry and Director-General Pope discussed ways to support the Loss and Damage Fund, which is crucial for enhancing the capacity of nations to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on migration.

Ambassador Abu Zeid also noted that regional developments were addressed during the meeting, including the situation in Gaza and the increasing need for humanitarian aid and safe zones for displaced persons. Regarding the ongoing crisis in Sudan, Pope praised Egypt's efforts in hosting a substantial number of Sudanese refugees and recognized the support provided by Egyptian authorities at both the governmental and societal levels.

Pope confirmed the IOM's readiness to assist Egypt in strengthening its capacity to support Sudanese refugees, in collaboration with Egypt's Ministries of Social Solidarity and Health. She emphasized the IOM's concern to prevent the Sudanese situation from becoming a forgotten crisis, with nearly 800 UN staff in Sudan and South Sudan ready to help the Sudanese people.
