Egypt’s Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium, Luxembourg, and NATO, Ahmed Abu Zeid, said the European Parliament’s recent resolution on Gaza represents significant political pressure on Israel and countries hesitant to take a firm stance on the crisis.

The resolution, adopted by a majority vote, calls for an end to famine and the worsening humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. Speaking in a phone interview with Egypt’s Extra News channel, Abu Zeid noted that this is the first resolution of such strength issued by the European Parliament since the outbreak of the conflict.

He stressed that the importance of the decision lies in the fact that the European Parliament reflects public opinion across the EU, with more than 740 members representing a wide spectrum of political groups and parties from across the continent.

“The resolution clearly condemns Israel and calls for imposing sanctions on it,” Abu Zeid said, adding that it carries a strong symbolic and political message. “It serves as an additional lever of pressure on Israel and on certain countries whose positions on Gaza remain ambivalent.”

The ambassador underscored that the move marks a significant development in Europe’s approach to the crisis, as calls mount internationally for urgent measures to alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
