Egypt`s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker announced on Thursday that the Egyptian electricity exports to Libya increased by 50% during 2020.

During a meeting with Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly to discuss projects for electrical connectivity between Egypt and a number of countries, Shaker said that the Libyan side requested at the beginning of 2020 to increase the amount of electricity exported to Libya.

Shaker added that the electricity ministry agreed to increase the electricity exports to Libya in light of the large quantities of nominal capacity for the electricity available in Egypt after the projects implemented in the electricity sector over the past years.

The minister explained that the increase in electricity exports to Libya is estimated at 50 megawatts. He explained that the amount of electricity transferred to Libya has become 150 megawatts, compared to 100 megawatts previously.

It worth mentioning that Egypt has been exchanging electrical energy with Libya for nearly 22 years when the electrical linkage line was launched between the two friendly countries in 1998 The amount of working voltage on this line is 220 kilovolts, which currently transmits 150 megawatts of electricity to them.

Egypt responded to the Libyan request in light of the electric power crisis that the country is experiencing there, which prompted the Egyptian side to double the exported quantities after the Libyan brothers requested that.
