Most people know that the quality of life and safeness of the present and future generations are strongly intertwined with the availability of sufficient energy sources and the sustainability of the energy infrastructure as well.

According to the latest statistics by Global Energy Review, the consumption of energy in developed countries grows at a rate of approximately 1% per year, and that of developing countries, 5% per year. Present reserves of oil and natural gas can only cover consumption at this rate for the next 50 years in the case of oil, and for the next 70 years in the case of natural gas.

Therefore, one of the fundamental priorities for an African country such as Egypt is to use several renewable energy sources (RE) and environmentally friendly energy conversion technologies.

Despite the fact that Egypt is nowadays endowed with large reserves of energy sources, mainly natural gas thanks to the Zohra plant exploration, the country has been encouraging and adopting the utilization of renewable energy sources, especially with respect to solar energy.

Also in this regard, the UN experts told Sada Elbald English (SEE) that the Egyptian government is greatly interested in sustainable and green energy, noting that it is currently implementing a number of green and environment-friendly projects in the sectors of energy, electricity, transportation, water, sanitation, and irrigation in order to achieve the global goals (SDGs) and Egypt's Sustainable Energy Strategy (ESE) as well by 2030.

They also indicated that the government took bold steps toward adopting an energy persification strategy with increased development of renewable energy sources and implementation of energy efficiency.

Overall, the national strategy for the transition to a green economy is part of Egypt's 2030 strategy, as the implementation of projects under green economy regulations guarantees better financing opportunities for them from international institutions, and also improves Egypt's rating in relevant indicators.

What makes Egypt’s prospects even more exciting are the latest green projects, such as the Benban Solar Park, a complex of solar power stations in Upper Egypt's province of Aswan, which has recently been inaugurated by Egyptian H.E. President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi.

The ongoing projects amounted to 30 percent of the state budget allocation for investments during the current fiscal year that ends in late June 2022, according to the Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala Al-Saeed.

In February, the Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI) revealed that Egypt aims to produce 42% of its power from renewable resources by 2030.

Speaking to Extra News, Ghada El-Gendy, the Executive Director of the Arab Renewable Energy Company, said: “Egypt has pioneering experience in implementing a solar power plant in Uganda under the supervision of the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy.”

In the same connection, she cited Egypt as one of the largest geographical locations in terms of solar brightness throughout the year.

Last year, the spokesman of the Ministry of Electricity, Ayman Hamza, revealed that Egypt plans to become a pivotal center for the renewable energy exchange.

Hamza also said that all countries that have an electric interconnection with Egypt will benefit from the cooperation.

Egypt has the potential to be one of the major contributors to solar energy projects in the African continent and become a role model to other Mediterranean countries as it has gone a long way towards completing the implementation of its national strategy on the green economy and is expanding its investments to carry out eco-friendly projects to improve the quality of life for its citizens.
