Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit offered condolences to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas after a Gaza Strip apartment building caught fire, leaving 21 people dead.
Aboul Gheit expressed sincere sympathy and solidarity with the people of Palestine, calling God to grant the visctims' families with patience and solace.
At least seven children were among the dead in the blaze at Jabalia Palestinian refugee camp on Thursday night, said the head of the Indonesian Hospital there, Saleh Abu Lai.
The cause of the fire is still unknown but a spokesman for the civil defense unit told AFP that supplies of fuel were stored in the three-storey building.
Following the tragic incident, President Abbas declared mourning for one day tomorrow, during which flags will fly at half-mast at all official institutions.
Abbas described teh incident as a national catastrophe and ordered all the relevant authorities to make everything possible to help the families of the victims and alleviate their suffering.
