In a phone call on Sunday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received a call from his Italian counterpart, Antonio Tajani, according to Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, the official spokesperson and Director of General Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The spokesperson revealed that the call came as part of close consultation and coordination between the two countries on various bilateral and regional issues, given the excellent relations between Egypt and Italy. The ministers discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations in the economic and investment fields, as well as optimizing the vast potential available in both countries. They also discussed the current situations and shared challenges in the Mediterranean region, with a particular focus on the issue of illegal migration across the Mediterranean.
Ambassador Abu Zeid added that the Italian Foreign Minister listened to Minister Sameh Shoukry's assessment of the developments regarding the crisis in Niger and the ways to resolve it diplomatically, ensuring the security and stability of Niger and the region. The call also touched on the situation in Libya, where the Egyptian Foreign Minister informed his Italian counterpart about Egypt's vision regarding the political and security developments and ways to support Libyan paths and solutions that guarantee holding parliamentary and presidential elections at the earliest opportunity.
The two ministers agreed to continue close consultation in the upcoming period and to hold a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September.
