MP Mohamed Aboul Enein, head of the Egyptian-European Business Council (EEBC), sent a message of condolences to Lebanon's ambassador to Cairo, Ali Al-Halabi, to express his sincere sympathy and solidarity with the Lebanese people over the catastrophic explosion that rocked Beirut last Tuesday.

The message reads as follows:

"In the name of all members of the Egyptian European Council, I extend to your excellency and the sisterly republic of Lebanon - the leadership and the people - my sincere condolences for the victims of the massive explosion that happened in the Beirut port, wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.

I also express our full solidarity with Lebanon in light of the current critical circumstance, but our confidence in Lebanon's ability to overcome this painful ordeal is great .

This tragedy showed the great international solidarity with Lebanon. The aid flows and firefighting and relief crews sent by many foreign and Arab countries confirmed that the brotherly Lebanese people will not be left alone in facing this crisis, and that Lebanon has friendly countries worldwide that it can rely upon in light of these hard times.

But given the catastrophe explosion and its humanitarian, social and economic repercussions, and the scale of the destruction that is beyond imagination, especially in light of economic crisis facing by Lebanon, the outbreak of the coronavirus, and the complex political challenges locally and regionally, we call on the Arab countries and the international community to harness all capabilities and increase the aid and funding necessary to provide medicines, care, food and supplies for those affected by the tragic incident.

We pray to God that Lebanon overcome this crisis, and become stronger and resilient, and more united in the face of dangers and challenges, in order to enjoy security, stability and prosperity it deserves.

Lebanon and the explosion

Lebanon’s Health Ministry announced on Saturday that the death toll from the massive explosion in the capital Beirut has climbed to 158, and at least 6,000 people have been wounded.

Many building facades and cars were damaged. The explosion left several people injured.

The cause of the blast is being investigated. But Lebanon’s prime minister, Hassan Diab, said the cause of the massive explosion was 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored in a warehouse for six years.
