An Egyptian court rejected on Sunday a complaint by owner of a container ship "Ever Given" against the continued detention of the vessel by the Suez Canal authorities.

Ever Given became congested across the canal due to high winds on March 23, which halted traffic in both directions and disrupted global trade that stopped traffic in the Suez Canal for six days in March.

The complaint was attached to a case before the Ismailia Economic Appeals Court, in which the Suez Canal Authority demanded compensation of $916 million from Shoei Kisen, the Japanese owner of Ever Given,  regarding the ship blockage and the process of freeing the vessel.

Ahmed Abu Ali, one of the lawyers representing Ever Given, said that the court referred the case on Sunday to a court of first instance, which is due to hear it on May 29.

On his part, Lawyer Ahmed Abu Shanab said that any judgment issued by the court of first instance could lead to an appeal by either side, indicating that the legal dispute may continue.
