Prominent Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris was awarded the prestigious Order of the Star of Italy at the rank of Grand Officer, in recognition of his longstanding contributions to strengthening ties between Egypt and Italy.
The announcement was made by Agostino Palese, Italy’s ambassador to Cairo, who is set to formally present the decoration during a ceremony held Thursday at his residence in the Egyptian capital.
The honor is among Italy’s highest civilian distinctions and is granted to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to fostering international cooperation and friendship with Italy.
In a statement following the announcement, Sawiris described the recognition as “a great honor,” highlighting Italy’s enduring role as a key partner to Egypt. He emphasized his commitment to further advancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in investment, culture, and shared development goals.
The award underscores Sawiris’s extensive role in promoting economic, industrial, and social collaboration between the two countries, as well as his broader engagement in international business and philanthropy.
Sawiris has previously received multiple international honors. In 2011, he was decorated with the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity for leading one of the largest Egyptian investments in Italy and contributing to its economy. He is also a recipient of France’s Legion of Honour, where he was elevated from Officer to Commander, one of the country’s highest distinctions.
His global recognition extends further, including Pakistan’s Sitara-e-Quaid-e-Azam, awarded in 2006 for his contributions to telecommunications, investment, and social development.
According to Ambassador Palese, the award reflects Sawiris’s sustained efforts in enhancing Egyptian-Italian relations, particularly through his investments in telecommunications and technology, his contributions to Italy’s digital economy, and his previous role as co-chair of the Egyptian-Italian Business Council.
