A young man known as Mustafa Al-Fayoumi from Beni Suef Governorate succeeded in launching an unconventional agricultural project on a 1,000-square-meter land, to produce healthy crops, using the idea of farming through “greenhouses” without using soil.
The idea of the project is based on planting in an air-conditioned plastic silo, by planting the seeds in coconut hairs inside plastic boxes and exporting them abroad.
El-Fayoumy was surprised that his project was chosen by Dr. Mohamed Hani Ghoneim, Governor of Beni Suef, to win first place in the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects, and his experience in soilless agriculture was presented at the Upper Egypt conference that was held recently in Fayoum.
The Governor of Beni Suef said that it is planned to provide the plants with calculated quantities of nutrients, as well as to accurately determine the amount of light and gas they need, as they are grown in a sterile environment and are not treated with fertilizers, pesticides and harmful chemicals; so the crops will be similar in appearance, cleaner, healthy, nutritious and tastier. It will grow faster and 50% larger.
The new project does not depend on soil for agriculture and reduces water consumption by 90%.
