Doctors performed the surgery at Ain Shams Specialized Hospital in Cairo, Egypt, for a young woman in her thirties, who was suffering from respiratory failure, as a lobe of her brother's lung was transferred to her.

The surgery was carried out in 3 operating rooms and under the supervision and guidance of doctors from several specialities, led by doctors of chest diseases, thoracic surgery, anesthesiology, and cardiovascular.

Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din, the Egyptian President's Advisor for Health and Prevention Affairs, described this unique operation in his country as a "very big achievement."

Tag El-Din said, in statements to "Sky News Arabia", that great efforts have been made over the past years by Egyptian medical personnel and scientists in order to reach this stage in which lung transplants are successful in the country.

He explained that many clinical trials took place before the operation, and a number of doctors travelled abroad for training and to review developments in the field of lung transplantation, in addition to following up cases in specialized clinics due to the complexity of these surgeries.
