Egypt has received more than 3.2 million tons of locally produced wheat so far this season, equivalent to 64% of the government’s procurement target, the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation said on Sunday.

The ministry attributed the increase in deliveries to a package of facilitation measures and financial incentives introduced by the state to support farmers and encourage higher supply rates.

Alaa Farouk said wheat remains at the forefront of Egypt’s priorities as a cornerstone of national food security due to its strategic importance in food industries, particularly bread production.

In a statement issued on May 17, Farouk said the cultivated wheat area reached 3.7 million feddans this year for the first time, marking an increase of around 600,000 feddans compared with the previous season.

He added that the government aims to procure 5 million tons of local wheat from farmers during the current harvest season.

Farouk said the state had moved to support farmers through directives from Abdel Fattah El Sisi to raise the procurement price to 2,500 Egyptian pounds per ardeb, a step aimed at ensuring profitable returns for farmers and boosting delivery volumes.

He described farmers as “a key partner in development and the first line of defense for food security.”

The minister also said there was close coordination between the Ministries of Agriculture and Supply to streamline procurement procedures, noting that more than 400 collection and receiving points had been established nationwide to reduce transportation distances and ease logistical burdens on farmers.
