Egypt has welcomed the adoption of two identical resolutions concerning the 2025 comprehensive review of the UN peacebuilding architecture. These resolutions were approved unanimously by the Security Council and adopted by consensus—without a vote—by the UN General Assembly. Cairo stated that this development reflects a rare moment of unity within the UN system amid growing geopolitical tensions and reaffirms that peacebuilding remains one of the few shared priorities that unite the international community.

Ambassador Osama Abdel Khalek, Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and co-facilitator of the review process alongside Slovenia, expressed gratitude to all UN member states for their support, flexibility, and constructive engagement.

In his address to the General Assembly, he emphasized that a year-long cycle of intensive consultations has resulted in a robust, consensus-based document that provides a practical framework for strengthening sustainable peace. The adopted document, according to Abdel Khalek, focuses on several core priorities.

He also expressed deep appreciation to the relevant UN Secretariat departments for their technical and substantive support, highlighting that the successful conclusion of the review marks the beginning of a new phase focused on implementation, follow-up, and continuous assessment of the actual impact on the ground.

Abdel Khalek noted that the final consensus brought together countries that traditionally hold differing positions. This reflects Egypt’s extensive efforts to bridge gaps, reconcile viewpoints, and produce a balanced text that accommodates all parties. He added that Egypt will continue to work to ensure that the commitments outlined in the resolutions lead to tangible progress in conflict-affected states.

The ambassador pointed out that Egypt’s leadership in the peacebuilding review aligns with its longstanding role in promoting peace and post-conflict development, both internationally and across Africa. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi spearheads African Union initiatives on reconstruction and development in post-conflict settings, while Cairo hosts the AU Center dedicated to these priorities.

Reaffirming its strong commitment, Egypt reiterated its dedication to strengthening the UN peacebuilding architecture, supporting multilateral cooperation, and collaborating with partners to ensure the effective implementation of the resolutions—ultimately contributing to lasting peace worldwide.
