Egypt has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, which came into effect on Wednesday morning, and has called for an end to the Israeli aggression in Gaza.
In a statement, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that this agreement would aid in de-escalating tensions in the region by ensuring the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. This includes the deployment of the Lebanese army in southern Lebanon and its authority over all Lebanese territories.
The ministry also emphasized the importance of respecting Lebanon's sovereignty and refraining from interference in its domestic matters.
Additionally, it highlighted the necessity of completing the establishment of Lebanese institutions, including the presidential election, without external influence and based on national consensus.
The truce, facilitated by the United States and France, took effect at 4 AM local time (02:00 GMT) and brings to a close nearly 14 months of hostilities along the Lebanese-Israeli border, which have been linked to the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip.
Egypt noted that this agreement should serve as a precursor to halting the Israeli aggression in Gaza, as noted in the statement.
Moreover, it called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, unrestricted humanitarian access for Palestinians, and an end to the unwarranted violations occurring in the West Bank.
Egypt further reiterated the necessity of pursuing de-escalation in the region, asserting that military solutions are inadequate for resolving regional crises, and that negotiation and the restoration of rights are essential.
